Required Items
- Vinyl eraser (1) – a sturdy eraser, great for bold, strong erasing
- Kneaded eraser (1) – a flexible eraser you knead like a piece of Silly Putty, great for lightly lifting charcoal. Knead it to clean.
- Vine charcoal (several sticks)
- Compressed charcoal (3-6 pieces) – Best to get a pack with hard, medium, and soft (or sometimes called 2B, 4B, 6B) to find the hardness that works best for you.
- White Carrés (2 sticks) basically its a white crayon, but much stronger than a crayon
- Drawing paper pad (minimum 30 sheets, 12″ x 16″ or larger)
Optional Items
- Tortillions – these are tightly wound paper that you use to blend charcoal and pencil to help keep your hands cleaner.
- Artist Chamois – This is a type of very soft leather that artists use to blend charcoal and pencil to help keep your hands cleaner.
Not part of official supply list, but recommended
- Workable Fixative – A spray that you spray on your work so the charcoal doesn’t smear (as much, I say it reduces smearing about 70%) on other material and keeps your level of black the same. You can still come back and erase the charcoal some if desired and add more charcoal on top.
Don’t bring spray fixative to class, but feel free to use in your own outdoor area or hood-ventilated space.
