Folk Art Ideas & Techniques Supply List

Estimated cost of required items: $68-84 (online at blick.com without tax or shipping) All items can be found in physical stores, but the cost might be higher.

These are the items you need to arrive with for the first class1.

1You do not need to buy the exact items linked. Any local art shop or other online store has comparable items that will perform great for you. You can also just bring supplies you already own!

You have a choice of 2 different painting options:

  • Option 1 is tube paints – this is for painters who want rich color and work on larger paintings and easier to mix up larger amounts of color. This is my preferred setup.
  • Option 2 is pan paints – this is for painters who want easy transport and faster cleanup. I use pan paints when I am traveling.

Required Items – both options

  • Pencil (1)
  • Eraser (1)
  • Fine liner black pen (1)
  • (1) 8″ x 10″ pad of watercolor paper, 90lb weight, minimum 20 sheets. The recommended pad of paper has 25% cotton per sheet, the cotton is great for beginner success. You can try less inexpensive paper that does not contain 25% cotton however, many students have less desirable results in their paintings with uneven application of paint and/or ‘pilling’ of the painting surface.
  • Size 4 watercolor paintbrush (1)
  • Size 8 watercolor paintbrush (1) or a flat 1/2″ brush, whatever you have on hand
  • White Gouache paint – Gouache paint is referred to as “opaque watercolor”. When water is added, it can be like watercolor, but can also be used thicker and cover initial layers. You can mix watercolor paints with the white gouache to tint the paint and cover other layers.

Required Items – option 1 – Tube paints

  • Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors Compact Set
  • Winsor & Newton Cotman – Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue) 8ml – I know this is a tube paint, but this is a superior paint to the Cerulean Blue that is in the compact set, so I do recommend it as a separate purchase. I will instruct in the first class how to put it in your compact set for easy use.
