Below are all the classes I’m offering at the Champaign Park District. All classes are held at the Springer Cultural Center in downtown Champaign, Illinois.

Kids Art Classes
Comics for Kids
Ages: 7–13
Explore the world of comics! Comic strips, comic books, and even manga will be our creative inspiration. Students will create characters and build stories and worlds. Learn new drawing and discovery techniques to bring our stories to life and share with others. A supply list of around $22 will print at time of registration
Drawing Superheroes for Kids
Ages: 7–13
Superheroes have been a part of our culture for almost 100 years! Students will learn about the creation of famous super heroes then create their own and build all the lore for them! Students will also learn how to draw their hero and create their own comics showcasing their hero’s skills! Local illustrator Kelli Roos will instruct students to get the hero they want to create. A supply list of approx. $22 will be provided at the time of registration. Participants may either purchase art supplies on their own from the supply list or purchase an art supply kit at registration.
Drawing for Kids
Ages: 7–13
Kids will explore the exciting skill of drawing through age appropriate discoveries and lessons. Use of drawing, shapes, and other innovative activities will grow your child’s ability to see the world around them and great spatial awareness with confidence with drawing. A supply list of approx. $22 will print at the time of registration.
Drawing Animals for Kids
Ages: 7–13
Animal lovers rejoice! Students learn tried and true drawing lessons with the added fun of creating their favorite animals! From alligators to zebras, and furry and feathery friends inbetween, students will be shown ways to draw to create the animal again and again with confidence. Each class your child will create colorful works that they can look and share with joy. A supply list of approx. $22 will print at the time of registration.

Tweens and Teens Art Classes
Anime & Manga: How to Draw Characters
Ages: 11+
Study the dynamic and imaginative art of Japan’s greatest and current Anime (cartoon) & Manga (comic) artists. Learn the techniques and materials used by professional artists in Japan and America as we explore and discuss examples. Discover ways to draw people and characters expressively and accurately. Learn drawing techniques and character-building to bring your characters to life. This class may be repeated to continue developing skills. A supply list of approximately $30 will print at the time of registration.
Anime & Manga: Color
Ages 11+
Colors and pop culture come together in Color Techniques! Learn and use basic color theory and techniques professional artists use to create their lush and colorful illustrations. We will explore how artists use lighting and how to apply them to create emotional effects. We will also engage in exercises to discover your own personal color style and how to express it! A supply list of approximately $50 will print at the time of registration.

Adult Art Classes – Drawing
Sketch Your World
Age: 15+
Be creative on your own terms! Sketchbooks are a small, yet amazing creative tool for you to express yourself anytime, anywhere. Learn techniques on how to see and draw the world around you quickly and expressively. We’ll learn ways to expand your creativity so you can create the world inside your head beautifully in the pages of your sketchbook.
Fundamentals of Drawing
Ages 16+
Strengthen your drawing and painting abilities! Local illustrator Kelli Roos teaches you proven techniques to draw still lifes with confidence. Various exercises will help you see to create highlights and shadows and capture a 3D feel. Additional exercises will develop your ability to create your own compositions. A supply list of approximately $35 will print at the time of registration.
Observational Nature Sketching
Ages 16+
Ages 16+ Be inspired and create works based on the beauty of our natural world. Learn techniques on how to see and draw the world around you quickly and expressively as we draw in local parks with some classroom instruction by local illustrator Kelli Roos. A supply list of approximately $30-40 will print at the time of registration.
Character Design: From Imagination to Illustration
Ages 16+
Discover how to create expressive, unique characters in any style—storybooks, fantasy, comics, or anime—in this engaging class for ages 16 and up. You’ll learn essential techniques for designing characters with personality and depth, from mastering anatomy and dynamic poses to crafting facial expressions and costumes. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, this course will help you bring your ideas to life. Instructor Kelli Roos will guide you through hands-on exercises to develop original, standout characters that capture your creative vision.

Adult Art Classes – Painting
Beginning Watercolor Painting
Ages 16+
Create wonderful works of art with this exciting medium! Local illustrator Kelli Roos will guide you through all the materials and techniques. Learn how to create your compositions as we explore landscape and still life subjects. Learn about the materials and how you can use them to achieve your artistic pursuits. We will explore and practice effective ways to control the watercolor paint to bring your vision to life! A supply list of around $114 will print at the time of registration.
Watercolor Painting – Flowers & Still Life
Ages 16+
Beginning watercolor painting class or portfolio required. Develop your technique further using flowers and still life. Learn principles to further your painting and how to successfully execute wet on wet techniques and other brush work to achieve what you want in your work. We will study your photos and live still life in class. All activities have one-on-one instruction from local illustrator Kelli Roos. A supply list of approximately $114 will print at the time of registration.
Watercolor Painting – Landscapes
Ages 16+
Explore your creative side using brushstrokes and color to create trees, mountains, rocks, and other natural items. Develop your favorite views and sights from around the world. We will also work with composition and color to show different lighting effects to capture different times of day. A supply list of approximately $114 will be provided at the time of registration. Art supply kit purchase is not available for the Monday session of this class.
Watercolor Painting – Tropics and Waterscapes
Ages +16
Create wonderful works of art with this exciting medium! Local illustrator Kelli Roos will guide you through all the materials and techniques. We will practice effective ways to control the watercolor paint to bring your vision to life! We explore and create simple scenes themed around the tropics and other waterscapes, and discover how painters will structure successful paintings. A supply list of around $114 will print at the time of registration.
Plein Air Watercolor Painting
Ages 16+
Discover the joy of painting outdoors! Learn to see the structures in nature and structures from actual outdoor observations. Learn how to simplify your subjects on paper using watercolor. Develop your works further using techniques for depth and detail in your work. Classes will mostly be outdoors with instruction from local illustrator Kelli Roos. A supply list of around $85 will print at the time of registration.
Folk Art – Ideas & Techniques
Ages 16+
Explore and create the richness of the world around you! Local illustrator Kelli Roos will guide you through all the materials and techniques. We will study what makes folk art such rich and engaging pursuit and why the works still resonate with us today. Simple art techniques and principles will be demonstrated and let you practice and expand on those ideas for your own unique and meaningful work. A supply list of around $85 will print at the time of registration.
Vintage Art – Ideas & Techniques
Ages 16+
Dive into your own creative pursuits with a retro twist! We will study a variety of vintage art from Valentine’s cards, children’s books, and animal illustrations throughout the 20th century to pop arts and country designs. Simple art techniques and principles will be demonstrated and let you practice and expand on those ideas for your own unique and meaningful work. A supply list of approximately $125 will be provided at the time of registration. Participants may either purchase art supplies on their own from the supply list or purchase an art supply kit at registration.
